Concert in Mörz (Germany)
July 12, 2003

Morz, July, 12, 2003. 19PM. A lot of cars arrived at a small village near Münstermanfield. Its population is around 170 people. All countrymen and guests from the whole Germany and abroad had the only goal – they came to see the Gala-concert, which was devoted to the 100th anniversary of the founding a Marksmen’s Union in Morz, named after St. Sebastian.

As musical guests there were "Lou und Band" (they represented Germany on Eurovision-2003), and – as a culmination – Thomas Anders. The question appears immediately: what can connect a small village like Morz and a worldly known star as Thomas Anders, who is usually being met not at the village holidays, but at the cities’ stages and popular TV-shows? The answer is simple: Thomas is a Morz born and bred, and he spent all his childhood and youth in this idyllic tiny village near Koblenz. His roots are here, and his parents and relatives still live here. The one, who got acquainted with Thomas personally, knows very well, how Thomas is attached to his motherland. What can be better than to make a special gift to "his Morzowers" – a Gala-concert with a specially prepared program!

We decided not to allow such a special event just slip away. We spent a wonderful day in Koblenz and in the evening went to Morz. We were really surprised! There were special parkings, and cars arrived there without any hurry. There were special parking places for invalids near the entrance, and also for those who cannot do without assistance.

After a while it became crowded in a big tent, called "concert hall". The tables and chairs were placed close to one another because of many people. We found our seats and celebrated the party with a glass of zect. We noticed a lot of fans sitting at the next table. We recognized them by the previous concerts, by Internet and by fan club parties. Everyone came here to see completely different Thomas, than we saw him during the last years.

The program started with congratulating speeches, devoted to anniversary. Then we had a performance of Lou with her band – she could create a very good atmosphere. That evening we could see her live on the stage, and were very surprised!

Finally at 22.30 a time came. Thomas appeared at the stage after the words: "He is not a superstar! He is a worldly-known star, who came home tonight!!!" From that moment one could not just sit quietly! Many jumped up and rushed to the stage, like during MT concert! There was the only difference – no security and safety grating before the stage.

Thomas greeted "his Morzowers" and other guests. He said that he was in worry a bit, because he knew almost everyone there! Maybe, his parents wouldn’t be very happy for a couple of weeks, if he would commit some rot there! Then Thomas told us a few small "anecdotes" from his youth in Morz and apologized before his ex-neighbors for making a lot of noise – he had to make long rehearsals and to repeat one song for three hours! Especially in the midst of summer, when all windows were opened widely. That’s why after beginning of the first song there were a few snickers…

Thomas started his Gala-concert with a song "Als hatt’ ich nie Goodbye gesagt" ("As if we never said goodbye") from the musical "Sunset Boulevard". Singing the German version, he made everyone feel his love towards his motherland, where he is rooted.

Thomas said that he thought a lot about today’s program. He spoke a bit about the beginning of his career and sang passages from "Judy" and "Ich will nicht dein Leben". It sounded unusually, and it was so fine to hear the 20 years old songs sang with Thomas’ today’s voice! Anyway, he said that he couldn’t sing them nowadays, because they misbecome to him. For example, "Judy" says that "she knows in her 16, what’s to do, when she kisses him and spending an evening with him." This song could immediately bring him in his 40-s to the court!

The next song was "When will I see you again," met by loud and stormy applauding. Thomas’ band consisted of a guitarist, bass-guitarist, keyboard musician and a drummer. It was collected especially for this party and represented an outstanding work!

Then we had the first MT song – YMHYMS, which have changed Thomas’ life completely, and did it twice! We noticed immediately that this (and other MT songs also) were changed a bit. Thomas asked his friend Christian Geller to re-produce these songs anew for his devoted fans, in order to make them more suitable to his new program. Well-known melodies, sounded newly – it was fantastic!

The audience was roaring and singing aloud. We came to conclusion that this evening Thomas wanted to demonstrate to everyone his incredible catholicity and his demanding much of himself. In order to express his feelings towards the birth of his son Alexander Mick Thomas sang a song "Not while I’m around" from the Broadway’ musical "Sweeney Todd". There was an absolute silence, and it was very exciting to see his gestures during that song… He overcame himself, and, I dare say, there were few among the audience who felt a bur in the throat…

After such a philosophical song Thomas had to "burn up" the audience again. He represented a very hot potpourri made of songs-representatives of all countries he have ever visited. He transferred us to France by singing famous Edite Piaf’ song "No je ne regret rien". Of course, this song was highly appreciated by the French fans! "New York, New York" represented USA, where Thomas gave 2 concerts recently. Then we traveled to "Copacabana", which has been inspiring his fans many years. These hits, had sung together with everyone, uplifted our mood so much! We noticed some people were dancing on the tables!

The next song was a MT-song "China in her eyes", loudly supported by the old fans. After the classic "The Beatles" hit "Hey Jude" Thomas said "goodbye" after 45 minutes of performance.

Of course, after such a various program no one would let him go! The encores calmed down only after Thomas and some old marksmen appeared on the stage. They thanked Thomas for his fantastic performance and rewarded with an honorary membership in their Union. Thomas was noticeably moved by it while receiving a diploma. Moreover, he was asked to organize the same Gala-concert to their 125th anniversary! Thomas appreciated this invitation with gratitude and said that he will come for sure, if he will not be chained to the invalid carriage at that time…

While singing for encore Thomas presented "Cheri Cheri Lady" and "Hey Jude" – reprise. After that he finally leaved the stage, followed by the applauding. His leaving looked like a triumphant procession!

We didn’t go immediately, because we felt very good staying there. When we finally walked out, we were surprised – there were not only good parkings, but also a nice illumination, made of garlands and floodlights, in order to find a way amidst the dark fields.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to Thomas, his band, to Christian Geller, Claudia, Guido Carp and everyone from Thomas’ team. You did an excellent job and filled this party with unforgettable experiences!

Tired, but totally happy we returned to the hotel at 1.30 AM and shared our impressions with each other before going to bed. Then we fell asleep, hoping to see it repeating soon.
